Meta Quest 2 has now been updated to v43. This includes the long-awaited removal of requiring a Facebook account to use a Quest headset.
Instead of Facebook a log in, Meta introduces Meta accounts - a new way to log in.
Users are now required to create a Meta account in order to continue using the headset.
One of the biggest complaints about the Quest 2 is the linking of Facebook accounts to headsets. Privacy and data concerns are tied to Facebook very publicly. Not to mention if a Facebook account gets banned then the headset and entire library of VR purchases become unusable. This has been a huge deterrent for consumers and enterprise alike. With the roll out of update v43, this system is set to change.
Users can disconnect their Facebook account from the headset. Though they can still choose to log in with Facebook if they wish. Meta account can be set up using either a Facebook account, Instagram account, or email. All Facebook accounts must be migrated to Meta accounts by January 1st, 2023.
The Quest must have its software updated to v43 before this option is available to use. Once updated, the screen to choose how to log in will be front and centre.
The set-up of a Meta account can easily be done through a link provided after the update (meta.com/setup). It is a fairly straightforward process that does not take too long.
In regards to privacy, we don’t see all too much changing. At the end of the day, Meta still will be collecting your data no matter how you are logged in. At least now there is an option to break off the social media attachment on the device.
